Many systems which have this property are self-organizing, they choose, deliberately or not, to eschew both the boredom of the fixed state or the uncertain chaos of total freedom to exist in a netherworld of partial reality. Here all things are relative, neither true nor false, valid only as far as their context allows. Here innovations happen, novelty comes into being and can persist long enough to reproduce, to trigger in its turn new explorations of possibility. Structures occur here over many scales, complexity is rife, self-similarity abounds, echoing the large in the small and the small in the large, the interpenetration of all things by each other. These systems defy classification, they delight in play, changing faster than they can be grasped, holding a narcissistic love of their own reality, a self-containment, an independence from the world around them. Yet they also exist as part of their world, feeding off it and contributing to it, a process of give and take that enhances both, raising the status of reality from dead rock to living planet.
