The Shield II

Leila Kubba Kawash 1997.

Complexity comment:

In the psychology of mankind fear plays a major role, we try to shield ourselves from the world about us in so many ways. In social terms we wear a mask over our true personality, avoiding the prejudices of our society by supressing any behaviour not regarded as part of the 'norm'. Yet this normality is a myth, every person is an individual so must eventually transcend any society of which they are a part, in at least some way. Accepting that such cultural normality does not exist and indeed should not, can free us from many of the trivial restraints that we suffer due to small-minded bureaucratic behaviour.

In the new thinking, rules are meant to be broken, in fact we can go so far as to say that rules mean stagnation and that all progress in human history has been due to the rule breakers ! This rather shocking conclusion follows logically from an analysis of change, any change must go beyond the system of which it is a part, so must exist outside the present rules. Taking account of this new input thus requires transcendence of the rule scheme of those involved, whether individual, company or society. Creative people are rule breakers, they instigate change and sadly this drives fear in the populace since the unknown is assumed to be worst. However, only by such creativity can we progress as humans, the advantages of novelty are potentially so much greater than the disadvantages, so we must bite the bullet and take our chances, trusting perhaps in our multi-dimensional instincts to show us which changes are beneficial, and helping us to avoid those shortsighted choices that will reduce our overall fitness as a species.
